Question 1

I do not know the password. Can this help?

Accepted Answer

No, and it does not try. This removes a password you can already type; it makes no attempt at recovery, and an empty password is treated as a mistake rather than a first guess. If you have lost the password to your own document, the honest answer is that this is not the tool, and neither is any tool that promises otherwise for a modern PDF.

Question 2

What happens to the password I type in?

Accepted Answer

It is used as an argument to qpdf and then it is gone. It is never written to disk, never logged, and it is passed to qpdf on standard input rather than on its command line — a command line is readable by anything on the machine that can list processes, which is why it is not used for this. The field is also cleared as soon as the file comes back.

Question 3

Does this one upload my file?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is one of only two tools here that does. Removing a password needs a PDF decryption handler, which no browser library implements. The file goes to a temporary in-memory workspace, is decrypted, and the workspace is deleted before the response finishes. The other six PDF tools on this site never send anything anywhere.

Question 4

What about a PDF that opens fine but will not let me print?

Accepted Answer

That is a permissions password rather than an open password, and this removes it too — with the same rule. If the document opens without a prompt, there is no open password to supply and the restrictions come off. Those restrictions were never enforced by anything except the reader honouring them.
